The penitential bridge, also known as the bridge of witches , is a unique viewpoint in Wrocław, located at the height of the fifth floor of the cathedral of St. Mary Magdalena. This place combines beautiful views with a fascinating legend of punishment for lazy brides.
History of the cathedral and the bridge
Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene, erected in the style of Gothic Wroclaw, gained its current shape in the fourteenth century. In 1481, two soaring towers were completed, connected by a characteristic bridge. During World War II, the bridge was destroyed, but in 2001 it was rebuilt, restoring this unusual monument to the city.
Legend about the bridge of penitents
According to the local legend, the bridge serves as a place of penance for lazy and vain girls who preferred their lives than home duties. An example is the story of Tekla, a beautiful but vain girl whose father cursed her laziness. She was sentenced to eternity of sweeping the bridge. Her young witch Martynka came to the rescue, who released Tekla thanks to the wizard Michał. The bridge remained a symbol of warning.
