Church of Peace in Świdnica is one of the most important monuments in Lower Silesia and one of the largest wooden Baroque churches in Europe. The site is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the entry “Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica”.
The church was built in the 17th century as a direct result of the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia and remains a unique example of sacred architecture created under strict political, religious and material restrictions.

History of the Church of Peace in Świdnica
The Church of Peace in Świdnica was built in the years 1656–1657, shortly after the end of the Thirty Years’ War. Under the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia, Emperor Ferdinand III allowed Lutherans to build churches, but imposed exceptionally strict conditions.
The church had to be erected outside the city walls, without the use of brick, stone or towers, using only materials considered impermanent – wood, clay and straw – and within a strictly defined time frame. These restrictions were intended to symbolically emphasize the confessional subordination of Protestants.
Despite these limitations, a monumental building was created in Świdnica, capable of accommodating several thousand worshippers, which has preserved its original spatial layout and structural form to this day.
Architecture and construction
The Church of Peace in Świdnica is regarded as the largest wooden Baroque church in Europe. It was built using timber-frame (half-timbered) construction, in which a wooden structural frame was filled with clay and straw.
The interior has a cruciform plan and is surrounded by multi-level galleries, which significantly increased the building’s capacity. This solution responded to the needs of a large Evangelical community while limiting the overall building footprint.
The rich Baroque interior decoration – filled with sculptures, polychromes and carved details – contrasts with the seemingly simple wooden load-bearing structure.
An additional historic element is the preserved historic bell placed within the wooden structure, serving as evidence of the church’s original furnishings.

The UNESCO World Heritage listing includes the Churches of Peace in Świdnica and Jawor as a unique testimony to religious tolerance in 17th-century Europe.
UNESCO highlights the exceptional scale of these buildings, their authenticity, the high degree of preservation of the original fabric, and their historical importance for the history of Protestantism in Central Europe.

Church of Peace in Świdnica – how to get there
Świdnica is located about 55 km from Wrocław. The city can be reached by both car and train. The Church of Peace is situated in the western part of the city, outside the former city walls, in the immediate vicinity of Plac Pokoju.
