Afrykarium in Wroclaw is an aquarium focused exclusively on Africa’s water ecosystems. Located within the zoo grounds, it showcases animals living in African rivers, lakes and coastal waters.
Wroclaw Zoo is the oldest zoo in Poland and one of the largest in Europe in terms of species diversity. Afrykarium is its most modern and distinctive section, attracting visitors throughout the year.
What is Afrykarium?
Afrykarium is a specialised aquarium opened in 2014. Its concept is based entirely on presenting Africa’s aquatic environments – from the Red Sea and the Mozambique Channel to the Congo River and Lake Tanganyika.
The facility is divided into themed zones that recreate natural habitats with controlled water temperature, vegetation and advanced filtration systems.
What animals can you see at Afrykarium?
- sharks and rays from the Mozambique Channel,
- Nile hippos visible both above and below the water surface,
- African crocodiles,
- African penguins,
- African manatees,
- coral reef fish from the Red Sea.
One of the most recognisable features is the underwater tunnel, allowing visitors to observe sharks and large fish from below the surface.
Does Afrykarium require a separate ticket?
No. Afrykarium is an integral part of Wroclaw Zoo and does not require an additional ticket. Entry is included in the standard zoo admission.
How long does it take to visit Afrykarium?
Walking through all sections of Afrykarium typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on visitor numbers and the time spent at each exhibit.
